Boulders Beach is a protected beach made up of inlets between granite boulders, from which the name is found. It is situated in Cape Peninsula, near Simon’s Town towards Cape Point near Cape Town in Western Cape Province of South Africa. It is also usually known as Boulders Bay. It is a famous tourist stop because of African Penguins colony, which developed there in the year 1982. It basically forms a part of Table Mountain National Park. Albeit is set in the middle of a residential region, Boulders Beach is one of the few sites where there are vulnerable birds that can be seen at a close range. With just two breeding pairs of Penguins in 1982 it has grown to about 3000 in current years.
Boulders Beach is bordered mostly by indigenous bush above False Bay’s clear water on one side and high water mark on the other. One of the convenient routes to Boulders Beach is to drive south on M3 from Cape Town. You can also go there by train by taking a MetroRail suburban train from Cape Town to Simon’s Town. You can see the penguins without paying any fees, but the private beach of penguin is controlled by Table Mountain National Parks and entry fee of R30 per person is charged.
If you go to Boulders Beach early on a summer day, you will be able to get yourself a spot on the beach, where public can go for a picnic, catch a wave and possibly even build sandcastles.
